Pramodya Ananta Toer – Menulis Sebelum Bicara

P

Embarrassment is a natural part of life, and everyone experiences it at some point. I recently had an experience that taught me valuable lessons about managing my emotions and facing the world with grace.

During a Zoom writing class, the instructor asked the participants to share why they joined the class. The moderator randomly selected a member to give a speech. As he spoke, he mentioned the name Pramoedya Ananta Toer, a renowned Indonesian author. However, in my eagerness to share, I mistakenly corrected him, saying “Anata, not Ananta,” not realizing my microphone was on. The reason I made this mistake was because I’m currently learning Japanese, and “Anata” is a common word in Japanese. My mind mixed up the context, leading to the correction.

The speaker graciously apologized, but I soon realized that I was the one in the wrong. The correct name is indeed “Ananta.”

At that moment, a wave of embarrassment washed over me. I wished I could disappear. However, this experience taught me some valuable lessons about managing emotions, learning from mistakes, and facing similar situations with confidence.

Managing Emotions

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s important to acknowledge your emotions rather than suppress them. Accept that you feel embarrassed, and remind yourself that it’s okay to make mistakes.
  2. Breathe and Relax: Deep breathing can help calm your nerves. Take a few deep breaths to help regain your composure and reduce anxiety.
  3. Stay Present: Focus on the present moment rather than dwelling on the mistake. Mindfulness techniques can help you stay grounded and reduce negative thoughts.

Learning from Mistakes

  1. Reflect on the Experience: Take some time to reflect on what happened. Understanding why you made the mistake can help you learn and avoid similar situations in the future.
  2. Apologize if Necessary: If your mistake affected others, a sincere apology can go a long way. It shows that you take responsibility for your actions and are willing to make amends.
  3. Forgive Yourself: It’s crucial to forgive yourself. Remember that everyone makes mistakes, and it’s a part of the learning process. Be kind to yourself and move forward.

Facing the World After an Embarrassing Moment

  1. Be Honest: If the situation arises again, be honest about your feelings. Sharing your experience can make you feel less isolated and more understood.
  2. Find Humor: Sometimes, finding humor in the situation can alleviate embarrassment. Laughing at yourself can show others that you’re resilient and can handle mistakes gracefully.
  3. Focus on Improvement: Use the experience as a stepping stone for personal growth. Focus on improving your skills and knowledge to build confidence.

In conclusion, everyone experiences embarrassing moments, and they can be valuable opportunities for growth. By managing your emotions, learning from your mistakes, and facing the world with honesty and resilience, you can turn these moments into powerful lessons. Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes, and each one is a chance to become a better version of yourself.

Special thanks to my brother, Firdaus Azhardi – may Allah bless him always.

P.S. I wrote this in English because I still feel embarrassed. 😭😭😭
